It is November and even though that does me Thanksgiving, Football and time with family, it also means it is Movember!

All through the month of October Women’s Health is supported with Breast Cancer Awareness month. There is literally pink everywhere…even on the football fields. But it seems that Men’s Health does not get that much attention.

Meet our Guest

River Karaba

Let me introduce you to my guest, River Karaba. I started following River and his Wife, Allison a little over 2 years ago on their YouTube channel, Riv and Al.

Through these years , I have watched them through many changes including their move to Portland, OR from Chicago. I love their laid back personalities and ability to have fun. We have gotten to know each other and they were one of my biggest supporters when I started this blog!

River has been a part of raising money for Movember for many years. For this reason, I asked him to answer some questions about this organization and to find out how we can help.

What is cause does Movember represent?

Movember is the leading charity changing the face of men’s health. They’re addressing some of the biggest health issues faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention.

How is growing a Mustache a symbol of that cause?

A mustache, in my opinion, is a unique symbol for Men in general. Something very recognizable and something that men can rally around, regardless of a man’s ability to grow the ‘stache. For me, a mustache is not a “natural” look. Adorning the mustache ALWAYS creates conversation, looks and laughs. This acknowledgment is a perfect segue into the Movember conversation and bringing awareness to the issues we support.

Movember supports several initiatives, one of which is bringing awareness and raising funds for researching Prostate Cancer.

My family was touched by Prostate Cancer when we lost my Paternal grandfather to the disease in the early 2000s. Men, like my grandfather, can be stubborn about their health and visiting the doctor. It was this stubborn behavior that lead to the disease getting beyond the point of treatment and lead to his death.

Had prostate cancer, or men’s related illnesses, been a topic of conversation or had those of us around him encouraged and normalized getting regular check-up, my grandfather could still be with us today.

I get involved to keep more grandfathers, fathers, brothers, uncles, sons, brothers, neighbors, cousins, etc. in the fight, for as long as God has in store for us.

How can you donate to the cause?

Great question. Any and all can get involved in spreading the word and helping raise money. All donations are tax deductible through the Movember Foundation site to a “team” of your choosing, like mine.

I want to thank River for taking the time to answer my questions. I also want to thank him for raising awareness for an issue that does not get the attention it deserves. Please use the banner above to make a donation to raise awareness for Men’s Health.

Use this month to go get your yearly check up! Many cancers, including Prostate Cancer, have a good treatment success rate if it is caught early!

If you are participating in Movember, please let me know in the comments below. And also don’t forget to go check out Riv and Al on their YouTube Channel!
